Reader Question: Coupon Organization

A reader asked:  "Would you do a post on how you organize your coupons?"  There are 3 basic components to how I keep my coupons organized:

1. Large accordian file for Sunday inserts:  I keep the inserts whole and write the date at the top.  I then file them by month.  This way if I read about a deal and the coupon is from "11/8 RP" I can just pull it out and snip.  I like this because there is no unnecessary cutting.  If I need to buy something and I want to know if I have a coupon for it, I use A Full Cup's coupon database to search for it.  It's free to sign up. 
2. Small accordian file for loose coupons:  This is used for coupons I receive in the mail; cut from magazines; print "in case"; pull from blinkies in stores; find in or on packaging; cut out of an insert and planned to use, but never did; etc.  It is organized by type of coupon (bathroom, cooking, dairy...)  I go through and clear the expired ones out at the end of each month. 
3. Envelopes:  When I plan a CVS or Target trip, I make my list on a junk mail envelope.  Note:  these are great for saving for many reasons.  I then store the needed coupons, gift cards, CVS card, printed coupon policy, a stock-up price list, etc inside the envelope to take with me.  I have a Target, CVS, Mall, and BRU/TRU envelope at all times. 

Just because this works for me, it may not suit your needs.  Some people like to cut out all coupons and make a coupon binder with trading card inserts.  Others like to carry around a box with little index dividers.  You just have to find what works for you.  Please feel free to share your own organization system in the comments.  Hope this helps!

$5 off $25 BRU Coupon

There is a new printable $5 off $25 Babies R Us coupon out.  Also, you should be able to stack it with the 15% off one item coupon you may have received in the mail this week.  It's glued to the front of the mailer (see photo below).  The combo would make a $25 item about $17.  Both coupons specify a "baby item", but can also be used at TRU.  The printable expires Nov. 6th and the mailer expires Nov. 25th.

7 Cents Per (Size 5) Diaper!

I am so excited about today's BRU trip.  Today I received a coupon in the mail for a FREE value box of diapers because I purchased 9 boxes at BRU as part of their Rewards R Us program.    Also today I saw on Babycheapskate that BRU is running a "Buy 2 Boxes, Get $15 Gift Card" deal through Monday.  So I thought to myself, "Hmm? I wonder if my free box counts as one of the two boxes?"  And it did!  So...

2 Value Boxes of Pampers Size 5 Cruisers = $82 ($41 each)
- Used a BRU FREE value box coupon towards the first box (mailed as part of Rewards R Us)
- Used a $1.00 Pampers manufacturer's coupon towards the first box (unknown mailer)
- Used a $5 BRU Pampers coupon (printable here)
- Used a $1.50 Pampers manufacturer's coupon towards the first box (unknown mailer)
+ Earned $15 gift card

When the gift card is taken into account, that's 248 diapers (124 diapers per box) for $18.50 or about 7 cents per diaper!  Note:  If these were size 1, they would be 4 cents per diaper!

While you may not have a free value box coupon handy before Monday, the lesson here is if you participate in Rewards R Us, then save your free coupon (but note the expiration date) for when a gift card promo is occuring and combine it with both BRU and manufacturer's coupons.

Note:  Partaking in the Rewards R Us program is only a good deal when you always use a combo of BRU coupons, manufacturer's coupons, gift card promos, and you take into account the free box once you have purchased 9 boxes.

How to Save at Babies R Us

The key to saving money at Babies R Us is to stack as many coupons as possible (ideally during a sale).  As with most stores, you can use one manufacturer's coupon in addition to a store coupon for the same item.  Here are some examples:
